NOVA Chemicals reduces Sarnia area workforce

NOVA Chemicals says its Sarnia area workforce has been reduced by about 30 employees.

"NOVA Chemicals can confirm that it is transitioning to a leaner, more agile business that competes in a highly dynamic industry," said company spokesperson Jennifer Nanz in an email to BlackburnNews.com. "Through attrition, retirement, and exits, our workforce has reduced by 10% over the past year. Locally, approximately 30 employees have been affected by layoffs this quarter as we transition to that leaner, more agile business."

Nanz said there's no impact to their growth plans and investment in the Sarnia-Lambton community.

"We are moving forward confidently with a $2 billion capital investment to expand our local asset base to improve our competitiveness, bring new technology to Ontario, grow our manufacturing exports and strengthen the area’s long-term economic viability," she said.

On its website, NOVA says it's the largest private employer in Sarnia-Lambton with more than 1,000 employees. The company has three manufacturing facilities and one corporate office in the area.

Jobs have been cut across the oil and gas sector this year, due in part to the pandemic and low oil prices.
