Sarnia police roll out reminder about bicycles on sidewalks

Riding a bicycle on the sidewalk is, for the most part, not allowed.

Sarnia police have planned an education blitz to remind cyclists about the rules of the road after noticing some bad habits in the city.

Police said the use of bicycles on sidewalks is limited to wheels no larger than 20 inches (51 centimetres) in diameter, to allow young children to ride on the sidewalk.

If you're caught with anything larger, you could be fined.

Police said a ticket issued under the bylaw requires the offender to attend court to determine the fine, if found guilty.

Officers said there are many hazards when riding bicycles on sidewalks.

If a cyclist strikes a pedestrian, injuries could be severe, and people with physical disabilities are especially vulnerable because they may not be able to avoid the bike.

Police said while they understand some cyclists feel uncomfortable riding on busy roads, pedestrians sometimes have the same uneasy feeling when a bicycle speeds by them.

Officers also remind cyclists that riding through a crosswalk is prohibited and carries a $110 fine.

Cyclists are encouraged to use bike lanes in the city, including the ones on Colborne Road, Michigan Avenue and Cathcart Boulevard.

Motorists are reminded that they're required, by law, to move over at least one metre from a cyclist when passing them on the road.

Cycling has become so popular during the COVID-19 pandemic, that stores have had difficulty replenishing their stock.

To help provide bicycles for less fortunate youth in the city, two Sarnia police officers have teamed up with Sarnia-Lambton Rebound to collect donated bicycles.
