Sarnia police bust alleged fraud operation, seize Cadillac

Sarnia police seized a $60,000 Cadillac and charged two people in connection with an alleged local fraud operation.

An investigation was launched January 14 after police received a complaint from a local banking institution.

Police said the suspects opened various accounts with different banks with the identity of an out-of-town victim, who was unaware of the criminal activity.

On Wednesday, police raided a home on East Street near Confederation Street, seized various items and charged two suspects. A 32-year-old man was arrested after a brief struggle and a 34-year-old woman was arrested without incident.

Items seized included a 2021 Cadillac CTG that was purchased late last month, computers, cell phones, and fraudulent pieces of identification including credit cards, military ID cards, and a First Nation status card.

Dustin Ray Bedard, of Sarnia, is charged with fraud under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, two counts of possession of a credit card, identity theft, resisting a peace officer, and unlawful use of military uniforms.

Shannon Dawn Algar, of Sarnia, also faces charges of fraud, possession of property obtained by crime, and identity fraud.

Bedard was being held pending a bail hearing while Algar was released on an undertaking and is to appear in court May 18, 2021.

Police said the investigation is continuing and further charges may be pending.
