Sarnia Fire Rescue Services and Ontario Fire Marshal investigators are working to determine the cause of an apartment fire, which sent two people to hospital.
A blaze in the 200 Block of Capel Street was reported early Wednesday morning, around 2:32 a.m.
Three stations and 15 firefighters responded to the scene. Public Education Officer Mike Otis said firefighters encountered high heat due to a "high fire load" and thick black smoke when they entered the third floor apartment unit.
Two people were taken to Bluewater Health for possible smoke inhalation. Sadly, a cat died in the fire.
Otis said the investigation is in its early stages.
Damage is estimated to be over $100,000.
Fire officials are once again reminding residents of the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home and a safety plan in place.
"No matter where you live, always make sure you know a couple of ways out and [have] a safe meeting place outside," said Otis.
It was a busy 24 hours for Sarnia Fire Rescue as firefighters were also called to a collision on Highway 402 Tuesday evening and a shed fire on Russell Street Tuesday afternoon. Otis said firefighters were quick to extinguish the flames and prevent it from spreading to nearby homes.
