Issue discovered during routine inspection shuts down NOVA cracker expansion

A maintenance outage at NOVA Chemicals Corunna could result in intermittent elevated flaring over the next couple of days.

Company spokesperson Julia Iacovella said in an email to Blackburn News that the unplanned outage is due to an issue discovered during a routine inspection.

No injuries or environmental impact were reported.

"Construction activities at the Corunna Cracker Expansion Project are temporarily paused as we complete this maintenance work, construction on the new polyethylene facility at the Rokeby site continues to safely progress," said Iacovella. "We anticipate the flaring to last two days as we safely shutdown the facility to complete repairs."

The duration of the outage is unknown at this time and the company apologizes for any noise and light disturbances the flaring causes for its neighbours and the community.

No other impacts are anticipated.
