The service said the fully involved fire started with a mattress in the basement of the building, though the ignition source is still unknown.

"The heat was distributed through the house via the furnace ductwork, but structural damage was kept to a minimum," said Fire Prevention Officer Roel Bus in a statement.

Sarnia Fire was then called to a second structure fire Saturday, this one on Donalda Street.

In a Tweet, the service said a quick-thinking neighbour alerted the residents and called 911, leading to limited damage to the outside of the home and no injuries.

*Sarnia News Today followed up with Sarnia Police in February for an update regarding the Davis Street Fire. Police said the fire was not suspicious and there is no further criminal investigation into the matter. Although the fire started with a downstairs mattress, the actual cause was not determined.
