Sarnia's mayor calls on MOE to shut down Wessuc biosolids site

Sarnia's mayor says enough is enough.

Mike Bradley, and many local residents, are growing increasingly fed up with foul odours stemming from Wessuc Inc. on Scott Road.

He has written a letter to the Ministry of Environment, calling on the biosolids company to be shut down until the odour issues have been fully resolved.

"The hot weather in the last few days seems to have taken it to a much higher level, and reports are coming in from all across the city, not just one area," said Bradley. "Again, both the city and the ministry have worked with this group and have tried to be fair. But, you reach a point where you say people should not have to be concerned about being in their backyard or their home without dealing with these nauseating odours."

Bradley later clarified that Wednesday's odour may have come from a farm property, but said the letter still stands.

Wessuc attended the June 27 open session council meeting where they were told to shape up or be shut down.

Bradley said they haven't taken the necessary measures to mitigate the smell.

"We have lots of odour experts in the city, we have thousands of them who have been reporting in to us and saying this is a problem. We have been fair and tolerant but what's been occurring over the past 24 hours is unacceptable."

Bradley is hopeful a solution can be reached sooner than later.

"One of the reasons I wrote directly to the ministry office here is because they're on the ground and I believe they have the ability to act. They have been working with this company and they seem to have a good handle on the file but they need to act now. I've also sent this letter to the minister of the environment himself because I'll be going to him if we don't get action at the local level."

The Brantford company previously issued a letter to Sarnia residents apologizing for foul odours.
