Oil Museum hosts book launch

The author of a new book, about petroleum and an international oil baron with local ties, was signing copies at the Oil Museum of Canada over the weekend.

The museum in Oil Springs hosted a book launch on Sunday to celebrate the release of Crude Genius, written by Gary May.

His latest book delves into details about William H. McGarvey, a former Petrolia mayor who was once dubbed the "Petroleum King of Austria" and "Europe's Rockefeller."

Ahead of the event, Curator and Supervisor Erin Dee-Richard said May will read a passage from part of his new book before signing copies.

"There's also going to be a band there, playing some music that would have been playing in 1873 to send off the first international drillers that left from Lambton County," said Dee-Richard.

May has visited the local museum in past years for book launches.

The former journalist published his first book Hard Oiler! in 1998 and has since penned a few others about Canada's early oil innovators.

The book launch will take place from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Copies of Crude Genius will be available for purchase. Admission to the event is free.
