Smoke and vape-free movie to be shown in Centennial Park

Lambton Public Health has partnered with the City of Sarnia to host a smoke-free and vape-free outdoor movie night on Friday, September 16.

Lightyear will be shown in Centennial Park at 7 p.m.

Health Promoter Lisa Clark said activities start at 4 p.m.

"We'll have a lot of great events for kids," said Clark. "Bouncy castles, activities where we're going to be talking about tobacco prevention, [there will be] giveaways, [temporary] tattoo artists there. Lots of fun, social activities and food booths will be there as well."

Similar events were held in Mitton Village and Watford last month.

"We had great attendance at the two previous smoke-free movies that we've held this summer. I think people are ready to get out and be socially connected, and so it's a great opportunity for families and friends to do that in a smoke and vape-free environment."

Clark said recent statistics indicate that 86 per cent of movies with smoking were rated for kids and teens in Ontario.

"Movies and other media that show tobacco, vape, or other substance use are leading influencers of youth to smoke or vape. So, it's important that parents pay attention to what movies and social media youth are watching."

Clark said these types of prevention activities are held province-wide to increase awareness.
