Sarnia police warn of another grandparent scam

Sarnia police are warning of a grandparent scam making the rounds once again, and say the scammers are impersonating local officers.

The service said they've received at least a dozen calls from concerned residents on Tuesday.

People are being told that their grandson is in jail, and money is needed to bail him out.

Police said they would never conduct business in this manner, and it's a scam.

Anyone who gets these types of calls is asked to hang up and never give out personal information.

Meanwhile, the Ontario Provincial Police, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre recently launched an awareness campaign.

Police announced the campaign after losses in 2022 hit $530-million across Canada. The total is a 40 per cent increase over 2021.
