Sarnia aims for more success during ParticipACTION Community Challenge

We're being encouraged to get out and get active this June.

The national ParticipACTION Community Challenge is back.

Residents can track their physical activity minutes through the ParticipACTION app, and the city with the most minutes logged gets a $100,000 prize.

Sarnia Community Services Coordinator Rebecca Warren said last year was the first time the city took part in the initiative.

Around 3.9 million activity minutes were logged last June, making Sarnia the fifth most active community out of 362 in Ontario.

"That includes things like walking, biking, doing garden work, playing frisbee, anything that involves physical activity," said Warren. "Pick something that you enjoy doing, and help us win this challenge."

A kick off event is being held on June 1 at the Strangway Centre at 260 East Street N.

It will feature a help desk to assist residents in setting up the app on their devices, as well as select free fitness classes.

There's a chance to try a popular Strangway Centre class free of charge every Tuesday in June. Classes include Tai Chi, Funfit, Flow Yoga and Aging Backwards.

Pre-registration for classes is required.

After June 30, the 50 communities with the highest number of minutes tracked per capita will be invited to submit an application explaining why they deserve to be Canada’s Most Active Community.
