Displays of pride in Sarnia

City hall will be showing a colourful display of support for the LGBTQ2S+ community.

Communications Manager Steve Henschel said in 2019, Sarnia City Council adopted a motion recognizing June as Pride Month and voted to illuminate city hall in rainbow colours.

"So visibility efforts like illuminating city hall, flying the pride flag at the flag plaza down in Paul Blundy park, they really demonstrate to our LGBTQ2S+ community members that they're welcome and valued parts of this community," said Henschel. "This particular illumination didn't come at a community request, again it came out of a council motion. So we do this every June for Pride Month. It's more of a city initiative as opposed to some of the other ones that come through the policy where a non-profit or charitable organization can reach out to the city and request to have city hall illuminated in their colours."

He said while there is a policy in place for the raising and lowering of the Canadian flag at city hall, there is the community flag pole at Paul Blundy Park.

Diversity Ed and Sarnia-Lambton PrideFest are hosting a flag raising at the Seaway Centre Parkette on Lochiel Street from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday.

Bluewater Health will recognize the start of Pride Month with a flag raising at the Sarnia hospital on Thursday at 10 a.m.
