Lambton well-represented at upcoming Indigenous Games

Sarnia-Lambton will be well-represented at the upcoming North American Indigenous Games (NIAG).

A number of students from North Lambton Secondary School are representing Team Ontario at the annual event.

Rogan Sands, is competing in fastball, Bronson George is on the hardball squad, Mariah Altiman is competing in volleyball and Hayden Wilson and Devyn Manning are the wrestling team.

Ali Page, from Gregory Hogan Catholic School, is on the four-member U14 swim team.

Sands, 18, plays third base, as well as right and left field.

"I'm very excited," said Sands. "When I found out about the news, I was screaming, I was jumping up and down, I'm so excited for it. I've been doing a lot of infield practice, hitting the ball at 100 miles per hour so I can get used to faster pitches."

Sands said he's been playing for almost 10 years.

"When I was eight or nine, I would play in the division a couple years above me," he said. "I just fell in love with the game for there. I switched over to hardball for a bit, and made AA there. It was fun, I loved it."

Sands said he hopes he can play well enough at the games to get scouted.

George, 18, has been playing baseball his whole life since tee-ball, and has a strong genes when it comes to sports.

His father Shawn Brandon played in the OBAs and his mother Jennifer George played competitive volleyball out in Winnipeg.

He said he can play anywhere in the field, but prefers pitching and centre field.

"I was pretty excited to get the call," said George. " At first, I didn't think I was going to make it because I got a late notice. But, super excited to make it.

He said he has experience playing travel ball as well.

"I'm always out doing tee work, I have a pitching net and I play catch," he said.

Altiman, 17, said she's been trying out for the volleyball team for the past three years in preparation for the games.

"I started playing volleyball when I was about 11-years-old," said Altiman. "I've been playing for the London Sharks basically my whole career. My family has been playing volleyball for a very long time and I just decided to follow that path too. My mom and dad played volleyball all the time and I was always at their games watching. My dad actually ended up winning at the NIAG games in 2002."

Altiman is also a member of the Wyoming Wranglers U17 fastball team.

"It helps because whenever there's an offseason for volleyball, I'm still training, just for a different sport," she said.

Wilson, 18, said he's excited to be taking part in the games for the first time, and said a lot of training has contributed to his success.

"I'm doing a lot of running, a lot of sprints and a lot of cardio," said Wilson. "I'm lifting weights and I'm also about to start training with the Western Wrestling Club. I also do jiu jitsu at the Butcher Shop in Sarnia and some kickboxing to help me prepare."

Wilson said this could be one of his last chances to compete in wrestling, and he's going to make the most of the opportunity.

He captured 8th place in wrestling at this year's OFSSAA championship.

He's planning to go to Fanshawe College this fall to study Police Foundations.

The games are being held from July 15 to 22 in Halifax, NS.
