German Shepherd to 'Tackle' new role with OPP

Lambton OPP have welcomed a new recruit to their Canine team, to eventually replace 12-year-old "Blitz" who will soon be retiring.

"Tackle" is a two-year-old German Shepherd from Alabama, and recently completed his training in tracking, evidence search, building clearing, and criminal apprehension.

He's expected to be tested on odour recognition for drugs and firearms later this month, and will replace "Blitz" once that is complete.

The other member of the Lambton Canine team is "Celaena," an explosives detection dog.

Police said the squad is led by PC Black, who has been dedicated to the Canine Unit for over 10 years.

The OPP said its Canine teams undergo rigorous training and testing before being utilized in front line duties. Teams are required to requalify on an ongoing basis.

The OPP said it's hiring, and those interested can view www.opp.ca for more information.
