Young Sarnia golfer heads south for world championship

A young Sarnia golfer is competing against some of the best junior golfers in the sport down in North Carolina this week.

Noah Olver, 9, is taking part in the US Kids Golf World Championship at Pinehurst Golf Course August 3, 4 and 5. Olver, a junior member at Sarnia Golf and Curling Club, has won multiple tournaments this year, including the USKG Canadian Invitational, the MJT Mini Tour at Merry-Hill Golf Club, and the CJGA Fanshawe College London Open at Firerock.

Olver told Sarnia News Today that he's been playing quite a bit of golf leading up to this week's tournament.

"My handicap is an 8.1, and I've mostly been playing probably five times a week," he said.

Olver, who attends Bright's Grove Public School, said he got into the sport when he was just four-years-old when his dad took him to Huron Oaks, the home course of Canadian golf legend Mike Weir.

"My dad just bought me a thing of golf clubs and we went to the course and I just started hitting them," said Olver.

Other events Olver has taken part in this year include The Junior Golf Showcase, and the Red White & Blue Invitational. "One of my goals is to probably play college golf and play for a state [school], and to turn pro," he said.

Olver tees of at 12:45 p.m. Thursday. To follow his progress, click here.
