UPDATE: Damage assessment in Warwick continues

Warwick Township crews expected all roads, excluding Zion Line, to reopen by the end of day Friday.

In an update around 1:30 p.m. Friday, the municipality said Bethel Road between Brickyard and Birnam Lines, Zion Line between Nauvoo Road and London Line and Kingscourt Road between Confederation Line and Egremont Road remained closed.

The township said some road structures on Zion Line required further assessment and the road would be closed until further notice.

Mayor Todd Case thanked public works staff, Warwick's volunteer firefighters and the emergency management team for its effort over the past two days.

“I also want to thank our neighbouring municipalities for reaching out and offering to assist," he said. "Special thanks to the County of Lambton for delivering numerous road signs and barrels for our use.”

The municipality said every gravel road was damaged by the heavy rainfall on August 23.

The widespread flooding forced the closure of roads throughout Warwick and a section of Highway 402.

"Engineering assessments are underway and road crews have started remediating roads. Roads that suffered the worst damage will be prioritized. Staff will continue to work over the coming week to fix all damages. Residents and travellers are advised to continue to drive at reduced speeds and with caution. They’re also asked to be mindful of workers on roadways," a statement read.

The township declared a state of emergency Thursday as the financial impacts from the severe flooding are expected to be significant.

"To assist homeowners who experienced flooding, the township has partnered with Twin Creeks Landfill to extend their hours of operation on Saturday, August 26 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Residents are encouraged to use this time to deliver their damaged household items and construction waste. A special drop off area at the Twin Creeks Landfill will be set up for this purpose and available free of charge to residents," the municipality said.

"In addition, Warwick Township has partnered with Wilson’s 5 Star who will be setting up waste bins for small items for people who are not able to access the landfill’s primary collection site. These bins will be placed on north side of the East Lambton Community Complex and the rear of the Warwick Community Centre off Elizabeth Street. These will be available until Monday and offered free of charge. The capacity of these bins is limited, so all who are able to transport items to the landfill are requested to do so," the statement concluded.

According to Environment Canada, some parts of southwestern Ontario received over 135 millimetres of rain Wednesday.

A rainfall warning was in effect for Sarnia-Lambton at the time.
