Teacher encourages teens to successfully submit film into festivals

Two local teens are excited to have their film submissions acknowledged by a couple of North American film festivals.

Grade 11 students Raveena Duggal and Myla Hayes, of Northern Collegiate Institute & Vocational School, created a "light-hearted type of horror film" called Randy while in Grade 10.

"This film is basically about two girls, they go to school and someone mysteriously pranks them, and then they have [the] intention to prank him back, and then it just goes downhill for them from there," she said.

Duggal said the entire process from planning to editing took about one month.

"Altogether it was just a really fun process," she said.

Duggal said the idea to submit their project into film festivals started with a supportive comment from one of their teachers, who encouraged them to enter the film into the Toronto International Film Festival.

"After our film was done, we made sure we got permission from our parents, and with their help, we entered into multiple film festivals," Duggal said. "We were very fortunate to have gotten official selection for the Dreamachine International Film Festival and the Western Canadian International Film Festival."

The Dreammachine film festival is based out of Los Angeles, California and will take place on October 31. The Canadian festival is an online event, which will be streamed on Twitch on September 9 and September 10.

Duggal said she loved the entire experience and plans to create another film with her friend in the future.

Proud mother, Parveen Duggal, said she hopes this encourages other artistic youth in the community to showcase their work as well.
