UPDATE: Seismic event felt in Corunna

Residents in the Corunna area may have felt a slight rumble from the earth early Thursday morning.

Earthquakes Canada has confirmed a 2.5 magnitude seismic event at approximately 7:19 a.m. (11:19 UTC).

The small earthquake was detected three kilometres northeast of Corunna, as stated on a government website.

According to the earthquake magnitude scale, anything less than 3.5 is recorded on local seismographs but is "generally not felt."

On a Corunna community Facebook Group, some people said they felt their house "jolt" or their windows and doors "rattle."

"Same here vibrated the pictures on the wall," wrote one contributor.

The last time a small earthquake was felt in the area was in November 2022, when a seismic event was recorded across the St. Clair River but could be felt in Corunna and Mooretown.

Natural Resources Canada Research Scientist Allison Bent told Sarnia News Today, there have been eight recorded earthquakes within 50 kilometres of Corunna in the last five years, but none were larger than magnitude 2.5.

Bent also specified that not all events were at the same epicenter.

"The area near Corunna is an area of low seismic activity but small earthquakes do occur from time to time. We cannot associate the earthquake with a specific fault but earthquakes occur due to stress build up in Earth’s crust," said Bent in an emailed statement. "The occurrence of a small earthquake does not mean that they will become more common in the future and our database shows no evidence that the average number of earthquakes is changing although the exact number won’t be the same every year."

A map comparing seismic hazard values across Canada can be found online. Looking at Ontario specifically, Lambton County is considered to be one of the lowest hazard regions.
