A student leadership group at Great Lakes Secondary School (GLSS) is again hoping to do some good in the community through its Acts of Kindness initiative.
Grade 12 student Emma Allen said they recently partnered with Team Outfitters to release new shirts and sweaters for their mental health matters campaign.
Money raised through apparel sales will go towards the Acts of Kindness initiative, which supports local residents and community organizations, such as the Inn of the Good Shepherd.
"We do a lot of things throughout the community. Last year, the money went towards groceries for families who needed help," said Allen. "We buy Christmas presents during the holidays for families in need. I believe, even a family's rent was helped when they needed it."
Allen said the fundraiser officially launched on October 27 and the campaign will run until December 22.
As a leadership student, Allen said it's very satisfying to help others within the community, especially around the holiday season.
"That's one thing that I find very fulfilling, to know that there are people out there who are having a happy holiday because of something that I was able to do," she said. "It also really helps you gather yourself and build yourself up as a leader in your final year of high school. It's a very tough year and it really empowers you when you get to see the impact you [helped] make throughout your high school experience."
The navy blue T-shirts, long-sleeve shirts, and hoodies currently for sale have the phrase "You Matter" on the front in various different languages. An important message is also printed on the back of the shirts, "Don't Judge My Story By The Chapter You Walked In On."
"That's pretty much the message that we want to promote to everyone," Allen said.
Like previous years, shirt designs were created by GLSS students.
Acts of Kindness apparel can be purchased online, through Team Outfitter's website.
