Higher grocery prices strain area food banks

Food banks across the province are struggling with keeping their shelves stocked as we head into the busy holiday season.

Inn of the Good Shepherd Executive Director Myles Vanni said they're seeing fewer donations compared to years past as everyone deals with the higher cost of food.

"We've got a kind of a double edged sword happening," said Vanni. "With the higher cost of food we've got more people, people we've not seen before using the food bank. On the other side, donations are down. Thanksgiving Drive was down, Cops for Cans was down, because people who are donating are also feeling that pinch of the cost of food."

On average the food bank assists 2,000 people a month, 940 of which are children.

"Because we are a grocery store model, people can make their own choices," said Vanni. "But certainly canned pasta, canned meats, hygiene items, side dishes like your mashed potatoes, anything like that is really important right now."

Donations will be accepted at Home Depot on Quinn Drive all weekend long for the 25th annual COOL 106.3 Food Drive.

In past years the event has collected over 10,000 pounds of food for the Inn.

It was recently announced that St. Patrick's High School will not be hosting Cyclone Aid in the spring, which benefited the Inn of the Good Shepherd, because of high food prices and the strain families are facing.

Instead, the school is looking at other ways of helping out the Inn.
