A former Sarnia politician who served in a number of roles across Ontario has died.
Mayor Mike Bradley shared Friday that Andy Brandt had passed away.
"Deeply saddened to inform you that former city alderman and mayor, MPP and interim leader of the Conservative Party, and longtime chair of the LCBO [Liquor Control Board of Ontario] Andy Brandt passed away this morning," Bradley said.
During his time as a member of provincial parliament, Brandt secured provincial funding to build Sarnia Bay Marina. In 2019, it was officially named Andrew S. Brandt Marina in his honour.
Brandt served as alderman in Sarnia from 1971 to 1974, and as mayor of the city from 1975 to 1980.
He was elected to provincial government in 1981, serving in Bill Davis' majority Progressive Conservative government.
In 1983, Brandt was promoted to cabinet as Minister of Environment, and in 1987 he was selected as interim leader of the party until Mike Harris became the full-time leader in 1990.
Brandt didn't seek re-election in 1990.
After his political career ended, Bob Rae appointed Brandt as chairman and CEO of the LCBO. He was reappointed to the position four times, retaining the position for 15-years, and remains the longest serving chair and CEO in LCBO history.
Mayor Bradley said a memorial service is being planned for mid January.
