Solar power, battery storage project proposed in Dawn-Euphemia

Enbridge Inc. wants to build a solar and battery energy storage project to help power its natural gas storage and compressor station in Dawn-Euphemia.

The company says the hybrid project would provide clean electricity to the site.

Mayor Allan Broad said the project off Bentpath Line would be relatively small.

"The storage and energy project that's being proposed by Enbridge is just a small solar panel farm with the necessary infrastructure to go along with it, which does include a small storage capacity and some inverters, transformers, etc.," Broad said.

The project, with the expected capacity of one megawatt solar and one megawatt battery, is hoped to reduce emissions from electricity consumption at the site.

The company said the proposal also supports its broader corporate goal of reducing emissions by 35 per cent by 2030, and to be net-zero by 2050.

"I'm glad to see that Enbridge is trying to achieve net-zero. Good for them for taking the initiative to do it with some solar, Broad said.

Enbridge said the project will also help alleviate demand on the local electricity grid.

The company hopes the project will start operating in October, 2026.

An open house is planned Wednesday, January 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Oil Springs Youth Centre.
