Royal SCITS Academy hosts open house

Sarnia parents and potential students got their first look at the Royal SCITS Academy Saturday.

The former high school on Wellington Street is now a revamped private school which will have students from grades one to 12.

Each classroom will have a maximum of 15 students according to school staff.

Royal SCITS Academy Director Matthew Rubio said the open house was to show off the project which has been in the works for several years.

"We're kicking off showing to the community what it is we're doing, getting the (community) involved early on in the process and trying to bring in some students as well," he said.

Rubio added the school is starting to open up some programs from kindergarten to grade eight but high school students will start in September 2024.

"We have gotten a lot of registrations, interests and inquiries about the program, how it's going to look like, what the classes look like after several years," said Rubio.

According to Rubio, parents have had many questions about the school especially once it changed ownership.

"Our real intention is to show the community that we're trying to bring life back into a Royal SCITS tradition and work hand-in-hand with the community," he said.

Phase one of the school revamp is complete, which included structural projects and foundation and safety aspects.

Some classrooms have started going through the renovation process especially in the old tech shop area.

Phase two, which was originally slated to begin in March, is already ahead of schedule.

During a tour on Saturday, staff said there are plans to have a primary cafeteria for students in grades one to six, playground areas and more open classrooms.

Additionally, the high school and primary grades will be in separate areas and introduction to trades and the arts will be implemented in the younger grades.

The school is in the process of hiring staff and accepting students into its program.
