Hundreds attend Age- Friendly Expo

A steady flow of people were at the Point Edward Arena Wednesday for the Sarnia- Lambton Age-Friendly Expo.

Around 100 exhibitor booths were set up to provide information to seniors.

According to Lambton Elderly Outreach Community Engagement Specialist Amy Weiler the attendance has grown for the event.

She said new this year is education sessions.

"It's been (well attended) considering it's the first year, so getting the word out but we keep encouraging people to check that out," Weiler said.

There were 19 presenters throughout the expo.

Weiler said the decision to add these sessions was because of feedback from past events.

"It was a resounding education sessions. Not only from the visitors but from the exhibitors, from networking and learning more about how other organizations can support clients. We hear a lot that clients are with more complex (needs) and sometimes three agencies need to support one client, this way they get to talk to each other " she said.

The plan is for these sessions to be added permanently.

Weiler also said there are many supports for seniors and their families in the community and it is showcased at the event.

"The expo is a nice way to add in the face-to-face element to getting the help and support people need," she said.

One of the topics included was mental health.

The Sexual Assault Survivors' Centre of Sarnia-Lambton were one of the booths to talk to attendees about mental health, different types of abuse and ways to prevent scams.

Public Education Coordinator Trish Vanoosterom believes attending an event like this is important.

"I think it's great to see everyone out and about and face-to-face and getting these resources from every agency around the community," she said.

Other areas visitors could get information on were finances, transportation and health care.
