Public meetings set to go over Canatara Park Master Plan

Residents will be able to review and provide feedback about proposed plans for Canatara Park during public information sessions, scheduled to take place on Tuesday, July 2.

The Canatara Park Master Plan project team will host two public meetings, each will include a presentation by consultants from The Planning Partnership.

"This is just an opportunity for people to hear a little bit more about the information they've been hearing, [and] what is drawing them towards the preferred design for the park space," said City of Sarnia Parks and Recreation Manager Krissy Glavin.

Work on an official master plan began in April and an online survey closed on June 28.

The design options focus on three concepts: environmental protection, tourism, and recreation.

The environmental protection option prioritizes drainage, enhancements to natural areas including — Lake Chipican, and restoring habitats. The proposed plan would also close access to certain areas.

The other two options do involve environmental aspects such as enhancements to natural areas. Both proposed plans also include the reintroduction of public transit to the park and re-organized parking areas.

The tourism option includes re-establishing a small area for events and possibly adding yurts or camping options in Tarzanland. Meanwhile, the recreation option looks at including a broad spectrum of activities such as pickleball, beach volleyball, and a canoe/ kayak launch.

Glavin said details about the design options can be found on the Speak Up Sarnia website if residents would like to learn more before Tuesday's meetings.

The public information sessions will be held at the Pat Stapleton Arena, inside the Kiwanis Room, from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. and from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Glavin said there will likely be further consultations moving forward.

"They will be doing an online presentation to council on the draft plan, and kind of where we are with that, on July 8," Glavin said. "The hope is to have the final plan towards the fall, end of September."

Meanwhile, councillors with the Village of Point Edward expressed interest in wanting to be involved in the master plan process during a recent council meeting, seeing as the municipality is so close to Canatara Park.
