Arrest made in theft of historic Sarnia school bell

Sarnia police have arrested a man in connection with the theft of a cherished item.

On July 15, the historic George Street School Bell was stolen from the grounds of the Lochiel-Kiwanis Center on College Avenue North.

Investigators say whoever took the bell wanted it for the metal. An attempt to sell it for metal salvage was made at a local scrapyard, but employees would not accept it. Police were able to track the identity of the person who tried to sell the bell for scrap.

A 52-year-old Sarnia man has been charged with possession of stolen property, and trafficking of stolen property.

The charges have not been proven in court. The man was released from custody with conditions.

Police recovered the bell at a Sarnia home on Tuesday.
