New deputy police chief committed to enhancing criminal investigations

Sarnia's new deputy police chief is vowing to enhance criminal investigations in the city.

Ron Hansen made the promise during his swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday, August 20, in council chambers at Sarnia City Hall.

He was appointed to the role of deputy chief designate on July 9.

Former Sarnia Police Service [SPS] Deputy Chief Julie Craddock -- who was appointed the new deputy chief of the Anishinabek Police Service last week -- introduced speakers and shared her own personal connection to Hansen.

"Ron and I were actually both sworn in together back in 1995 as constables with the Halton Regional Police Service, and I am personally so grateful to be part of your special day today," Craddock said.

Sarnia Police Services Board Chair Paul Wiersma welcomed Hansen to the community, saying the board was really pleased when they met him during the interview stage.

"We were very, very impressed with the level of leadership and operational experience and Ron's stories, his experiences, are so captivating there was a point where I thought I was watching a cop television show," said Wiersma.

Chief Derek Davis said Hansen has an extensive background in criminal investigations and he will be leading a team of dedicated professionals with very heavy workloads.

"Ron Hansen, when I think of an investigator, if someone in my family was in need of police investigation... that's the investigator I would want to call," said Davis. "He's an exceptionally tenacious police officer, [and] has been since the day he's started. He's the only person that I know... that was driving an impaired driver back to the station and pulled over a stolen car on his way... with the impaired in the back seat. That's the type of police work and work ethic that Ron Hansen brings. He's absolutely exceptional."

"As I step into this role, I'm acutely aware of the challenges that we face," said Hansen. "Crime affects every corner of our community, and it's our duty to confront it head on. My primary focus as deputy chief will be to enhance our criminal investigations, increase our clearance rates and work to address an increasing crime severity index in Sarnia."

He said every case deserves their full attention and dedication.

"We'll prioritize the development of our investigative units, ensuring that our officers are equipped with the best tools, training and support to conduct thorough and effective investigations," he said. "We will employ evidence-based strategies and leverage technology to streamline our processes, reduce case backlogs and improve investigative outcomes."

Hansen said it's not just a matter of statistics, it's about restoring trust and providing closure to victims and their families.

"Our community must have confidence that when they are wronged, we will act swiftly and decisively to bring offenders to justice," he said. "To this end, I will work to enhance our investigative protocols, foster collaboration with external partners, and ensure that we follow every lead with precision and determination."

Hansen thanked his family, new and former colleagues, and members of the public for attending the ceremony.

Joining Hansen in the senior leadership role is Acting Deputy Chief Mike Van Sickle, who was appointed on August 13, 2024 after Craddock's departure was announced.
