Criminal charges against SPS officer dropped

Outstanding charges against a Sarnia police officer have been withdrawn after he signed a peace bond.

Cst. Tim VanCowenberg was initially charged in February with assault, forcible confinement and mischief.

An additional charge of breach of recognizance was laid against VanCowenberg in March.

The Ontario Court of Justice told Sarnia News Today the outstanding charges were withdrawn on August 23, 2024.

Sarnia police said VanCowenberg has had an initial misconduct hearing under the Police Services Act (PSA), and during that hearing the matter was stood down awaiting the court resolution.

Police said now that the criminal matters are complete, the PSA hearing and internal investigation will continue.

Cst. VanCowenberg remains assigned to non-operational duties with the Sarnia Police Service.
