NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh announced the end of the supply and confidence agreement his party made with the Liberal government on Wednesday.
In a campaign style video posted to social media, Singh said he notified Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that he had ripped up the deal.
"Justin Trudeau has proven again and again he will always cave to corporate greed," said Singh. "The Liberals have let people down. They don't deserve another chance."
The announcement does not necessarily mean a federal election will be triggered, as the Liberals would still need to lose a confidence vote.
Singh's announcement came just days after Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre asked the NDP to pull their support to trigger an election this fall.
In the video, the NDP Leader said Poilievre was also a threat to the middle class of the nation.
"There is another, even bigger battle ahead. The threat of Pierre Poilievre and Conservative cuts," said Singh. "From workers, from retirees, from young people, from patients, from families — he will cut in order to give more to big corporations and wealthy CEOs."
Trudeau addressed the media from Rocky Harbour, N.L. following the announcement, saying he was focused on the National School Food Policy.
"These are the things that we're focused on. I'll let others focus on politics," he said.
Trudeau also said Pharmacare "is going to become a reality." The Canada Pharmacare Act was one of the legislative commitments the NDP sought when the supply and confidence agreement was struck back in 2022.
The bill is still sitting before the Senate after the House passed it in June.
