The Huntington Society of Canada's Sarnia Chapter is raising awareness about the progressive brain disorder that is often passed down in families from generation to generation.
President of the local chapter Celin Payne said a fundraiser is planned at the Dante Club on Wednesday, September 18, featuring America's Got Talent semi-finalist and comedian Greg Morton.
"He does great impersonations and he's very animated. I'm very excited for this collaboration because he's got over 30,000 followers on Instagram and again he was on America's Got Talent, so it's a really good opportunity for us to spread awareness," said Payne.
She said there will also be a silent auction, musical guest Jack Redman, and food with funds supporting Huntington's research and patient services.
"A lot of it goes towards research because we hope someday to have a cure but it also goes towards medication to help slow down the progression because once symptoms begin it kind of just explodes from there," said Payne. "It also goes towards support, so counselling."
Additionally, funding goes towards a youth program called Young People Against HD.
Huntington's disease is described as similar to having ALS, Alzheimer's Disease, and Schizophrenia all together.
"Another part of the disease is there's a 50 per cent chance of inheriting it if one of your parents has it," she said.
Payne has a personal connection with disease. Her mother had it before she passed away and her grandfather had it.
Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at the Huntington Society's website.
