Saved by the Beep returns for its second year

Sarnia Fire Rescue is reminding residents to test their smoke alarms as a part of the "Saved by the Beep" campaign.

The second annual province-wide campaign, also known as "Test Your Smoke Alarm Day", will be held on Saturday, September 28.

Sarnia Fire Rescue Services Chief Fire Prevention Officer Roel Bus said the campaign started last year after a spike in fatal fires.

"It was high in 2021 and then peaked at 133 in 2022. The fire marshal said this is enough, we need to do something a little more than just our regular campaign," he said.

Bus said in Ontario, it is required to have working smoke alarms on every storey of your home.

"If you are found to not have (a smoke alarm) then the fine is $360 per alarm," he said.

Bus recommends testing fire alarms once a month and if they have batteries, rather than being hard-wired, those batteries need to be changed at least once a year.

"We're trying our best to get the messages out on all kinds of different platforms like this and on social media," he said.

Saved by the Beep is loosely based on the show Saved by the Bell.

Last year, a video that recreated a scene from the sitcom featured Sarnia firefighters to highlight the importance of testing smoke alarms.

According to Bus, the video will once again be shared to social media.

Residents are encouraged to take photos of themselves testing their smoke alarms.
