For the second straight year, the Sarnia Sting opened their Ontario Hockey League season with a win over the Windsor Spitfires.
Tyson Doucette scored the winning goal at 1:42 of the first overtime period to give the Sting a 5-4 win in front of just under 4,000 fans at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena on Friday night.
Things didn't look very good for the Sting to start the game, as they fell behind 3-0 in the first period after the Spitfires got goals from Ryan Abraham, Cole Davis, and Jack Nesbitt.
But Beckham Edwards got the Sting on the board before the end of the period, and the two teams went to the first intermission with Windsor holding a 3-1 lead.
Kaeden Johnston and Zack Filak scored for Sarnia in the second period, evening the score at 3-3 going into the third.
The Sting and Spitfires traded goals in the third period, with Johnston picking up his second goal of the night for Sarnia and Liam Greentree scoring for Windsor to tie the game and send it to overtime.
That's when Doucette found the back of the net to give the Sting the win.
Goalie Nick Surzycia stopped 29 of 33 shots for Sarnia, while Windsor's Carter Froggett turned away 23 of 28 shots.
The Sting head to Saginaw on Saturday night to face the defending Memorial Cup champion Spirit. Game time on CHOK 103.9 FM & 1070 AM is 7:05 p.m. The pre-game show starts at 6:30 p.m.
