Unsanctioned car rally fails to materialize in Grand Bend

The mayor of Lambton Shores says advanced planning paid off over the weekend.

Hundreds of modified vehicles were expected to converge in Grand Bend Friday and Saturday, but the large unsanctioned event failed to materialize.

Doug Cook said the few vehicles that did show up, were taken off the road.

"We were very proactive with the OPP," said Cook. "They did a great job of putting out their message on social media, plus on their other forms of communication. Getting the message out there about safe driving, so I think that did deter a lot of the folks from wanting to come to our area."

The municipality enacted traffic calming measures, and blocked off vehicle access to certain areas, including the beach.

An increased number of Lambton OPP and MTO officers were also stationed in the Lake Huron resort community looking for stunt drivers and illegally modified vehicles.

The protocols were activated after officials in Wasaga Beach, where a previous event created a disturbance, tipped off Lambton Shores about a planned gathering.

"OPP and other police forces, they're all monitoring these folks all the time on their social media. So they are fully aware when something's happening," Cook said.

Drivers caught stunt driving or operating illegally modified vehicles faced substantial fines, demerit points or even vehicle impoundment.

Lambton OPP reported on X on Friday that a driver was issued fines for unnecessary noise, improper muffler and having a blow-off valve.

OPP said the modifications are illegal and not welcome on Ontario roads.
