Sarnia police swear in new deputy chief

The City of Sarnia has a new Deputy Chief of Police.

Michael Van Sickle was sworn in Friday afternoon at Great Lakes Secondary School.

He was officially appointed as the deputy chief designate on October 3.

Van Sickle said he brings operational experience to this new role.

"I understand how our city works, the politics of it. I help Chief Davis and Deputy Chief Davis Hansen through that but also the day to day operations of the service I'm quite familiar with," he said. "I'll do a lot of the transactional stuff and the here and now for the service."

He said the Sarnia Police Service continues to go through changes within the organization.

"It's the continued modernization and the innovation and the growth of our service, that's what's next. It's a big picture but that's what's coming," Van Sickle said.

He takes over for former Deputy Police Chief Julie Craddock who left the service to join the Anishnabek Police Service.

Van Sickle started at the Sarnia Police Service in 2004 and has been with the service for 20 years.

He said it's exciting to be sworn into this new role.

"A ceremony like this it makes it hit home. So, I'm very excited for what the future holds," Van Sickle said.

He thanked his family, friends, current and former members of the Sarnia Police Service and members of the public for attending the ceremony.
