Habitat launches gingerbread house competition

Habitat for Humanity Sarnia-Lambton is hosting its first ever Jingle Bell Build.

Fund Development Manager Angela Kirkland said they're hoping to get 20 teams signed up for the gingerbread house building contest.

"We're looking for teams of six gingerbread builders to showcase their building skills and creativity as they compete and transform pre-cut gingerbread walls and gingerbread houses," she said.

Kirkland said teams will have to purchase a building permit to participate.

"Building permits for this event are $450 for team participation, which will include festive foods, beverages, entertainment," she said. " Teams will have two hours to construct, decorate and wow us with their gingerbread creation."

The goal is to raise $20,000 for the Home Build program, with prizes awarded to the top three builds.

Kirkland said the idea came from a Habitat for Humanity in British Columbia.

"It's a twist on our traditional team build days and we thought we would give it a try," said Kirkland. "It was something new to bring to Sarnia with nothing like this that's very appropriate for habitat submission and building affordable houses in Sarnia."

The build at Imperial City Brew House is set for Wednesday, December 4.

"This is an opportunity to come out and participate and support our Home Build program," said Kirkland.

Teams looking to participate can sign up on the Habitat for Humanity Sarnia-Lambton website.
