Family Literacy Day Festival returns

Staff at the Sarnia Library are anticipating a large turnout for the second annual Family Literacy Day Festival after the inaugural year was such a hit.

Toronto-based songwriter and entertainer Dan the Music Man will return to the area for live performances on Saturday, January 25.

He will perform two 30-minute shows at Sarnia Library

Theatre at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Attendees can also participate in other activities from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. such as face painting, virtual reality and retro gaming, and henna art.

Free popcorn will be available, courtesy of the Kiwanis Club of Sarnia-Lambton Golden K.

The Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery will also hold tours and an activity for visitors to create stamped clay pendants.

Further details about the free events being offered can be found on the library's website.

Public Services Coordinator for Youth Programs and Outreach Vanitia Campbell said last year, there were nearly 550 attendees, which was more than what they were expecting.

"It was very successful last year and we've planned accordingly for that higher number this year," said Campbell.

Information tables will be set up during the festival with representatives from Literacy Lambton, Lambton Learns, Lambton County Children's Services, Lambton Public Health, and Boys and Girls Club Sarnia-Lambton.

"The point of the day is to help educate families on the concept of family literacy which is this idea that when the whole family engages in literacy-rich activities together, it strengthens everybody's literacy, the kids and the adults included," Campbell said. "Also, because we've got things like retro gaming and virtual reality, we also have a couple of henna artists who are going to be there, there are activities that can engage older kids as well."

Guests do not need to register to attend the event.
