A community alert regarding cockroaches has been issued in Kettle and Stony Point.
The notice, posted to the First Nation's website on Tuesday, said there have been reports of increased cockroach sightings in both residential areas and local businesses.
"It's important to work on preventative measures to keep your home safe," it read.
The First Nation recommends cleaning up food crumbs, spills, and garbage regularly as a preventative measure.
Minimizing clutter and keeping trash in sealed containers -- that are disposed of regularly -- is encouraged.
It's also recommended bait traps be purchased to help confirm an infestation. The First Nation said the traps attract cockroaches with a food-based or chemical lure, which helps capture and kill them.
To prevent cockroaches from spreading, it's recommended residents minimize the flow of people in and out of their home. Cockroaches can travel through clothing, bags and other personal items.
Residents bringing second-hand furniture, appliances, or items from other homes are advised to check them thoroughly for signs of pests before bringing them inside.
The First Nation said community members may be eligible for assistance to help cover the cost of remediation.
If you believe your home has cockroaches, you're asked to contact Kettle and Stony Point's Ontario Works or Housing Department.
The First Nation said spraying for cockroaches alone will not solve the problem. An extensive cleaning is essential before treatment.
