Over $70K spent on workplace harassment matter at Sarnia City Hall

Over $70,000 has been spent so far, in relation to a workplace harassment matter at Sarnia City Hall.

The results of an independent investigation were released following a special meeting of Sarnia council on Monday, however the cost was not disclosed.

Communication Manager Steve Henschel shared the information on Wednesday.

"The city is providing additional information in response to media and public inquiries related to the cost of a workplace harassment matter reported on Monday of this week," Henschel said. "Invoices received to date related to the matter total $71,493."

As previously reported by Sarnia News Today, the independent investigation found city councillor Bill Dennis breached the city’s Workplace Harassment and Violence Policy and Program and applicable laws with respect to his conduct toward city staff.

Council announced plans to implement protocols to ensure the safety of city employees as a result of the findings.

Councillor Dennis will not be allowed to attend in-person council meetings, but he can participate virtually.

Any written or email correspondence of any kind must be directed to two designated individuals. The councillor is also not to contact or engage with the CAO in person or virtually without the attendance of another councillor.

A letter Dennis sent to Sarnia News today stated his email communication to staff members -- outside of the two designated individuals -- is prohibited and will be blocked.
