Messy mix of snow and ice on the way

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Sarnia-Lambton.

The national weather agency said snow will begin Wednesday afternoon and continue into Thursday morning.

Environment Canada Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Geoff Coulson said up to 20 centimetres of snow is possible, with peak snowfall rates of two to four centimetres per hour.

"Unfortunately more snow is on the way from a large-scale weather system currently getting itself together down in the Texas area that's going to push into the Sarnia area with snowfall beginning around 2 p.m. or 3 p.m. Wednesday," said Coulson. "That snow will continue through the evening hours, potentially mixing in with ice pellets and maybe even some freezing rain Wednesday evening and into the early morning hours of Thursday."

Coulson said motorists are being told to expect hazardous winter driving conditions and adjust travel plans accordingly. Area roads, highways as well as sidewalks and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.

"Certainly the drive home Wednesday evening is going to be impacted with that snow beginning by mid-afternoon and then thickening up as we get into that evening rush hour," he said. "And maybe even some impacts on Thursday morning as well, even though the worst of the snow will be departing the area, we could still be dealing with again the aftermath of that snow and ice pellet for the drive in on Thursday morning."

We could need the shovels again over the weekend, as forecasters are tracking another system on the way.

"Unfortunately it does look like yet another system likely to bring widespread snowfall to southwestern Ontario for early Saturday morning, right through the day on Saturday, maybe even into the early morning hours on Sunday as well," said Coulson. "It's a little too early to tell how much snow could fall with this system."

We're advised to take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas.

Motorists are also reminded to avoid parking on city streets while snow clearing operations are underway.
