Dedicated Plympton-Wyoming community member remembered

Flags at the Town of Plympton-Wyoming's municipal office were lowered to half-mast on Tuesday in honour of a former deputy mayor who passed away on Monday.

Donald (Don) James Nelson passed away peacefully at the age of 83.

An obituary posted online by Needham-Jay Funeral Home said Nelson was the proud owner of Nelson’s Flowers and Garden Centre at Reeces Corners, an active community member, and a local politician.

"He will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, sense of humour and deep love for his family. Don will be greatly missed by all who knew him," read the obituary.

Town staff confirmed to Sarnia News Today that post-amalgamation, Nelson served two terms as deputy mayor from 2006-2010 and 2010-2014 and as councillor from 2002-2006 and 2014-2018. Information pre-amalgamation was not readily available.

He sat on several committees and boards including: tree planting committee (2014-2018), the Sarnia-Lambton Physician Recruitment Taskforce (2010-2014), and fire department boards (2002-2010).

"Don was a respected member of council and staff have fond memories of working with him," said Chief Administrative Officer Adam Sobanski in an email.

Staff said Nelson dedicated 53 years of service to the Wyoming Lions Club. He was also heavily involved with the legion.

A celebration of life will be held on March 22 from 1 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the Wyoming Lions Hall.
