MDOT begins Blue Water Bridge plaza expansion project

Cross-border travellers may notice construction work on the U.S. side of the Blue Water Bridge over the next several months.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT)'s Blue Water Bridge plaza expansion project in Port Huron is scheduled to kick off on Friday, May 16.

MDOT Senior Project Manager Carrie Warren previously told Sarnia News Today the project will be done in two phases.

Component one will include the relocation of the I-94/I-69 Exit 275 to M-25 (Pine Grove Avenue), reconfiguration of the 10th Avenue and Pine Grove Avenue intersection, rebuilding parts of eastbound I-94/I-69, and installing sound walls to reduce traffic noise.

Construction will continue through December, with some sound wall work continuing into 2026.

This phase of the project is expected to cost $36.3 million.

The City of Port Huron issued a construction advisory over social media this week, advising motorists to follow posted detours and signs as there may be lane closures on the I-94 and I-69.

It's unknown when exactly the project's second phase will begin, but Warren said they expect to award a contract by March 2026.
