Lithium-ion batteries believed to have sparked fire in Wyoming

Fire officials are reminding residents about the possible hazards surrounding lithium-ion batteries after a fire was reported in Wyoming over the weekend.

Plympton-Wyoming Fire Chief Will Davidson said crews from the Camlachie and Wyoming stations were called to the area of Broadway Street and Main Street on February 22, at approximately 10:15 a.m.

Someone passing by noticed smoke coming from the commercial building, according to the fire department.

The building was under renovation and was unoccupied at the time of the blaze.

Davidson said crews quickly brought the fire under control and it's believed the cause was lithium-ion batteries.

Damage from the blaze was contained to one of the commercial units, however, a damage estimate is not yet known.

No injuries were reported.

"The fire department would like to remind residents that lithium-ion batteries have the capability of causing fires which produce very high heat," read the media release. "Where possible, lithium-ion batteries should be kept away from residential areas where people sleep. Lithium-ion batteries can be disposed of at an electronic waste disposal site."

The Plympton-Wyoming fire department said an electronic waste bin is located at the Reece’s Corners Public Works Yard, located at 5819 Oil Heritage Rd.

Lambton OPP said Broadway Street was closed between Front Street and Niagara Street for approximately two hours on Saturday while emergency crews extinguished the fire.
