Ford PCs elected to third majority government

The province of Ontario is staying Tory blue for a third straight term.

Premier Doug Ford called the campaign just over a month ago, saying he needed an even larger majority than he had to deal with U.S. President Donald Trump and the threat of American tariffs on Canadian imports. He didn't get it.

The Progressive Conservatives won another majority, coming away with 42.9 per cent of the vote, but lost three seats. The party went from 83 seats in the Ontario Legislature to 80.

The Ontario Liberal Party made gains through the night, winning 14 seats, an increase of six, four at the expense of the Ontario New Democratic Party. The NDP started the campaign with 31 seats but won 27 in Thursday's election.

The province elected its first Independent MPP. Bobbi-Ann Brady won the seat in Haldimand-Norfolk.

The Green Party will return to Queen's Park with two seats, no change from the previous election.

For Ford, the win is historic. The last time a party leader in Ontario took their party to three straight majorities was in 1959.

Voter turnout improved slightly in the latest election. In 2022, just 43.5 per cent of eligible voters cast ballots. In this vote, 45.1 per cent did.

Official statistics for this year's election will be available in the coming days.
