Fire department issues safety warning after batteries spark blaze

Sarnia Fire Rescue is providing safety tips when using lithium-ion batteries after they sparked a balcony fire on Euphemia Street Thursday morning.

The blaze broke out just after 8:30 a.m. and was deemed accidental.

There were no injuries and the damage is estimated at $5,000.

Firefighters recommend purchasing and using devices that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory, put batteries in the device right away and only use the charging cord that came with it.

It is also advised to not charge the device under your pillow, on your bed or on a couch, do not keep charging the device or device battery after it's fully charged and store batteries away from anything that can catch fire.

Sarnia Fire Rescue said if you notice an odour, change in colour, too much heat, change in shape, leaking or odd noises to stop using the battery.

Meanwhile, on February 22 the Plympton-Wyoming Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the area of Broadway Street and Main Street, which was also believed to have been caused by lithium-ion batteries.

A full list of safety tips is posted to Sarnia Fire Rescue's Facebook page.
