Some summer student positions at the City of Sarnia remain open if local youth are looking for employment opportunities during their school break.
Human Resources Manager Tammy Broer said the city usually hires 40 students every summer with positions in various sectors.
"Some of them are labourer positions, some of them are more specialized -- like the engineering and environmental services positions," she said.
Broer said some positions have already been filled, and some will close this week.
"We may still have a few positions that are yet to be posted so keep an eye on the website," she said. "Normally, we try to start students the first week in May, and they work through until the end of August. Lifeguards are the exception, they'll be hired once the season starts up."
Broer said the lifeguard positions tend to be a little more difficult to fill.
"I think there's not as many people studying through the life saving program at Red Cross, they're certainly not applying to us like maybe they did 10 years ago," she said. "We do have students who return to us year after year, which certainly helps."
Jobs that tend to be more popular include parks and public works positions. Broer said there also tends to be a fair number of applications for administrative positions.
Broer described the summer program as a win-win situation for local students and the city.
"It's full-time hours for the students so they're making some extra money. It's an opportunity for them to gain valuable working experience, oftentimes in a field related to their studies," she said. "It also helps us by enhancing our current complement of highly skilled seasonal and full-time employees, and it allows us to enhance service in areas that typically see a higher demand in the summer months, so our parks and beaches... those types of areas."
