Lambton OPP are urging the public to be extra vigilant after a Petrolia resident was the victim of an emergency scam.
According to police, at around 1:30 p.m. on March 14, the victim received a call from someone claiming to be their son.
The imposter said they needed bail money after being involved in a crash, and the victim was directed to someone claiming to be his lawyer.
Police said someone posing as a court employee came to the victim's Joe Street home that afternoon to collect the money, totalling $6,000.
The suspect is described as a female, about 40 years old, with a heavy build and brown hair.
The investigation is ongoing.
Police said the scammers often use tactics like urgency, fear and secrecy when contacting innocent victims.
Residents are urged to first check with another family member or trusted friend to verify the information before sending money or providing credit card information by phone or e-mail.
Police said it's vitally important that the incident be reported every time it occurs, to allow them to investigate and prevent others of becoming victims.
