A mid-May tradition dating back over 30 years will return to Point Edward this week as the Lambton Shrine Club holds its annual Vidalia onion fundraiser.
Ten pound bags will be sold for $20.
"The funds will be going to the Children's Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre, and Shriners hospital for children affiliation, which is a formal agreement that was set up last September between Montreal Shriners Hospital and London Children's Hospital," said club member George Spence.
The sale will be held in the south parking lot, under the Blue Water Bridge. Spence said a trailer, courtesy of C and B International Freight System Inc., will have the club's logo at the side. "This is a larger fundraiser throughout Mocha Shriners out of London. A bunch of different shrines and units, much like Lambton Shrine Club, will be doing this throughout southwestern Ontario," said club member Rob Donald.
The onions were recently transported from London, and the sale is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, May 14.
The sale is first come, first served.
Donald said onions will be sold from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday while supplies last. Last year, they sold out by noon on the Friday.
"Don't wait or you might be too late," warned Donald.
He also said that while 10 lbs might sound like a lot, if kept in a cool, dark place, the onions will keep for a long time.
Meanwhile, commuters are advised to drive along Venetian Boulevard to avoid ongoing construction in Point Edward.
Updates about the fundraiser will be posted to the Lambton Shrine Club's Facebook page.
