Air bag issue prompts Mazda recall

Mazda has recalled more than 170,000 vehicles across Canada and the U.S. because of an issue with the Sophisticated Air Bag Sensor (SAS).

The recall includes 2024 and 2025 models of the Mazda 3 and the Mazda CX-30.

The automaker reported that if the vehicle's battery is depleted by leaving the ignition switch in the "ON" position for two hours or more without the engine running, it could cause an error with the SAS which deactivates the air bags.

Mazda became aware of an issue with the air bag in June 2024, but didn't initiate an immediate recall because of the unique circumstances necessary for the issue to occur. Further discussion and testing led to the recall going out this week.

As of May 23, the manufacturer said no accidents or injuries related to the issue had been reported.

Owners of the affected vehicles will be contacted directly by the company. A software update or replacement will be provided free of charge.
