Shell to help enhance Rebound with $165K agreement

For the first time in 41 years, Sarnia-Lambton Rebound will be able to offer transportation for youth using the Hub.

This is thanks to a $165,000 donation by Shell's Sarnia Manufacturing Centre in Corunna.

Executive Director Michelle Holbrook said a new van has been purchased through Finch Ford, and they're waiting for its arrival.

"Transportation is a massive problem and barrier for our young people and now we get to provide access," she said.

In addition to addressing transportation issues, the funding will help create an outdoor green space.

Fund Development and Marketing Coordinator Beverly Horodyski said the youth brought up the idea.

"Be it a gazebo, or something outdoors that they can enjoy and get out of the indoor hub and connect with nature. So, there will be a new gazebo and other enhancements that will be a part of that hub scene coming up," she said.

Horodyski added even the indoor space needs some enhancements.

She said programming will also be improved, with more guest speakers and field trips.

"A lot of times those ideas sit in a file because the funds aren't there to make them happen, so now we can really put that into action," Horodyski said.

The funding is part of a three-year agreement with Shell and has been in the works for over a year.

Horodyski said they are feeling grateful for the commitment.

"Times are tough economically, so to receive this sum is such great belief in Rebound and the programs we offer and the youth and their families and the children that we serve," she said.

Bonnie Yu, Vice President for Shell Manufacturing in Corunna, said the company felt inspired by the work the organization is doing.

"We've had many conversations and learned about the challenges they've had in reaching further into the community. The fact they've had to rely on taxi chits, or people just having access to bus rides to get here, we thought there was a prime opportunity to contribute a shuttle to be able to increase their mobility," she said.

The Hub is an integrated safe and open drop-in space for people aged 12 to 24 to meet in a supporting environment.

Rebound currently operates 21 different programs and services.
