Motorists are being reminded to be patient and vigilant around school zones as children head back to the classroom on Tuesday, September 2.
"The Sarnia Police Service would like to ask drivers to be aware of the school zone signage and reduce your speed," said Staff Sgt. Jim McCabe. "Also, be patient when school buses are stopped and be mindful of the school bus lights being activated and students exiting the bus."
The fine for failing to stop for a school bus can range from $400 to $2,000 and six demerit points for a first time offence.
Multiple construction projects are still underway across the city as well, so drivers may want to accommodate for extra travel time.
Meanwhile, parents and guardians are asked to speak with their children about road safety, if they plan on walking or biking to school this year.
"Parents are encouraged to educate their kids about crossing with the crosswalk ... Follow the direction of the crossing guard," McCabe said.
For motorists, disobeying a crossing guard stop sign can result in a fine of up to $1,000 for a first offence.
McCabe said road safety is a shared responsibility.
"The Sarnia Police Service will have increased patrols out there, monitoring the roadways to ensure everyone returns to school and gets to their destination [safely]," he said.
Lambton County OPP will also be conducting increased patrols in school zones and along bus routes.
OPP encourage students to avoid distractions while walking to and from school or from the bus stop, and stay seated while riding the bus.
